A troubling trend of increased distracted driving is causing chaos on our roads. According to the National Safety Council, the number of people killed on U.S. roads and highways last year was the highest in 14 years. Distraction was considered a factor in as many as 25 percent of these crashes.
“Talking and texting on cell phones, while the most talked-about cause of driver distraction, is not the only thing that can distract a driver. Seemingly harmless things like tuning the radio, adjusting the GPS, eating, drinking, or putting on makeup can take a driver’s eyes and mind off the road, with potentially deadly results. Even talking to other passengers can be a dangerous distraction,” said Michelle Anderson, Director of Operations at The National Road Safety Foundation.
As an employer, community leader, or parent, it’s essential to educate yourself and others about the dangers of distracted driving.
Drive Responsibly
April is an excellent time to regroup and take responsibility for your choices on the road – including distracted driving. Follow these seven tips for a safe ride every time:
- Need to send a text? Pull over and park your car in a safe location. Only then is it safe to send or read a text.
- Accept the DO NOT DISTURB WHILE DRIVING setting if you have an iPhone. Use a safe driving app (e.g., LifeSaver, AT&T DriveMode) with the Andriod phone.
- Designate your passenger as your texter. Allow them access to your phone to respond to calls or messages.
- Do not scroll through apps, including social media, while driving.
- Remind your friends and family: If you’re in the driver’s seat, it’s the only thing you should be doing. No distractions.
- If your driver is texting or otherwise distracted, tell them to stop and focus on the road.
- Ask your friends to join you in pledging not to drive distracted. You could save a life. Share your pledge on social media to spread the word and use the hashtag #JustDrive.
